Disability Tech Goes Global: From World Cup accessibility to AI-powered assistive tools, May showed how inclusive design is moving into the mainstream

Last month made our thesis around tech for maximizing independence and potential feel unusually tangible. You could see it in global sports, where the World Cup is preparing sensory rooms, sign language interpretation, audio description, and haptic experiences for fans at matches. You could see it in major technology companies, where Apple, Meta, Microsoft, and Xbox each used Global Accessibility Awareness Day to show how AI can support people in everyday life. You could see it in financing news, where capital continued to move into neuromodulation, Parkinson’s, vision restoration, care navigation, and diagnostics. And you could see it in our own writing, where the Curb Cut Effect reminded us that what looks like an edge case is often a concentrated expression of a universal problem.
Accessibility is not only a compliance checkbox or a statement about “values”. Increasingly, it is a way to build better products, reach more people, and see the next market before it is obvious to everyone else.

Disability on the global stage: the beautiful game gets more accessible

The World Cup is usually a story about scale: more cities, more countries, more fans. This time, it is also becoming a story about access. FIFA says the 2026 tournament will be the first sports tournament to receive KultureCity Sensory Inclusive recognition, with sensory spaces at all 16 stadiums across 104 matches in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. The rooms are designed for fans who experience sensory overload, including people with autism, PTSD, dementia, anxiety, and other conditions, and will include reduced noise, dimmed lighting, tactile resources, seating, and technology intended to support relaxation and sensory regulation.
Just as important, FIFA is treating accessibility as part of the fan experience rather than an accommodation hidden off to the side. The tournament will offer live sign language interpretation for all matches, audio-descriptive commentary for all matches, haptic boards for blind and low-vision fans at select stadiums, sensory bags at Fan Info points, social story venue guides in multiple languages, trained venue staff, mobility assistance, and accessibility resources through Inside.FIFA.com and the official tournament app. FIFA World Cup COO Heimo Schirgi framed the work simply: “Football unites the world, and it is our goal to help everyone to participate in the sport – whether as a player or as a fan”.
This matters because sport is a public square. If accessibility can work at a 104-match, 16-city, 3-country event, it becomes harder for airports, hotels, venues, universities, employers, and consumer companies to argue that inclusive design is too complicated. The World Cup is not just adding accessibility technology – it is showing what happens when access is treated as part of the experience from the beginning.
Ted Lasso helps us to “Believe”
Disability is not only something sports systems need to accommodate. It is also a source of elite athletic performance, community, identity, and global competition.
That brings us to Jason Sudeikis. CBS Sunday Morning recently profiled how the Ted Lasso star helped his longtime friend Billy Brimblecom Jr. after Brimblecom lost his leg to sarcoma and faced the enormous cost of a prosthetic limb. What began as a Kansas City barbecue fundraiser eventually became Thundergong!, an annual event supporting Steps of Faith, a nonprofit that helps amputees who lack health insurance or prosthetic coverage get access to prosthetic limbs. CBS reported that Thundergong! has helped pay for prosthetic limbs for more than 2,000 amputees, and the most recent event raised more than $1 million.
It is a very Ted Lasso story, but it is not only heartwarming. It is also a market failure story. Prosthetics, mobility, insurance coverage, financing, rehabilitation, and long-term support are still too fragmented for too many people. Sudeikis put it beautifully: “To do something that you love with people you love, to help people you may never meet, I wish it on everyone”.
Our work sits in the same gap, but with a venture lens: how do we help build companies that make essential access and independence less dependent on charity, geography, or luck?
Funding Rounds
This month’s financing news clustered around a few very human problems: mobility, bladder control, movement, sight, specialist access, chronic care, and earlier detection. A few signals stood out:
- Arkeus closes a $25M Series A. Led by Folklore Ventures, QIC Ventures, R+ VC, and Main Sequence, Arkeus is building the “eyes and brain” for autonomous systems. Originally positioned as a defense company, this technology has the potential to unlock self-driving vehicles that work in any condition (haze, smoke, dust, low light, and ocean glare), enabling anyone to explore the world on their terms and achieve greater independence.
- BlueWind Medical raised $47.8 million through a combination of equity and debt to accelerate commercialization of Revi, its FDA-cleared implantable tibial neuromodulation system for urgency urinary incontinence. What stands out is the pairing of medical-device rigor with everyday usability: an outpatient implant near the ankle, activated at home through an external wearable.
- ReVision Implant raised €4 million for Occular, a cortical visual prosthesis designed to bypass the eye and stimulate the visual cortex directly. The company is targeting blindness from causes including retinal degeneration, optic nerve damage, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy, with first-in-human trials planned for Q3 2026.
- Pair Team was accepted into CMS’s ACCESS model, a 10-year Medicare program that goes live July 5 and rewards measurable outcomes for chronic care rather than time spent with clinicians. The company uses a voice AI agent called Flora for intake, referrals, and check-ins, and TechCrunch reported that Pair Team has raised about $30 million from investors including Kleiner Perkins, Kraft Ventures, and Next Ventures.
Big Tech and accessibility: AI moves closer to daily life
Apple
Global Accessibility Awareness Day has become a moment when major technology companies show what they believe the next interface should feel like. Apple previewed accessibility updates powered by Apple Intelligence across VoiceOver, Magnifier, Voice Control, Accessibility Reader, generated subtitles, and Apple Vision Pro. To us, the most striking feature is powered wheelchair control using Apple Vision Pro’s eye-tracking system, launching with Tolt and LUCI in the U.S.
Apple also previewed richer image descriptions in VoiceOver, assistive exploration in Magnifier, natural-language Voice Control for people with physical disabilities, Accessibility Reader for users with dyslexia or low vision, and on-device generated subtitles for uncaptioned videos. The pattern is clear: AI is beginning to sit between the user and the world, helping translate visual, auditory, motor, and cognitive demands into interactions that are easier to manage.

Meta
Meta made the same point from a wearables angle. The company said its AI glasses are already helping people who are blind describe surroundings and helping veterans with memory loss navigate daily routines, and it announced new Be My Eyes group calling, voice controls during calls, one-touch shortcuts, captioned calls, and developer access through the Meta Wearables Device Access Toolkit. Meta also highlighted OOrion and Aira as early third-party experiences for blind and low-vision users, and described a Carnegie Mellon partnership exploring EMG and Meta Neural Band input for people with spinal cord injuries.
Microsoft + Xbox
Microsoft’s Ability Summit brought the same shift into speech and identity. Microsoft Chief Accessibility Officer Neil Barnett wrote that the Summit included Team Gleason’s Voice Preservation Dashboard, which helps people living with ALS securely bank their voices and later use those models with Azure Custom Voice and Tobii Dynavox software. That is a deeply human example of the Curb Cut Effect in AI: the same capabilities that matter most under the constraint of ALS may also shape broader expectations for personalization, agency, and continuity.
Xbox also used GAAD to improve Adaptive Thumbstick Toppers through Xbox Design Lab, including a more durable attachment design and a new Goal Post shape available as a free 3D-printable file. The update is small in the best possible way. It shows that accessibility advances are not always sweeping product announcements. Sometimes they are better fit, better durability, lower cost, and listening carefully to player feedback.

Policy and regulation: more time, same obligation
Policy moved in two directions this month. On one hand, federal agencies continued adjusting accessibility compliance timing. HHS announced that its Office for Civil Rights is extending the web and mobile accessibility compliance deadline under Section 504 for recipients of HHS funding. The specific timing should be tracked closely, but the practical point is broader: more time does not change the direction we need. Digital services still need to become accessible.
At the same time, the Department of Education announced a new $144 million investment to help states expand interventions for students with disabilities under IDEA Part B and Part C. The announcement also included new guidance allowing states to use IDEA Part C funds to help expectant parents of infants with disabilities access information, tools, supports, and services before and after birth. For founders, this reinforces the fact that early intervention, family navigation, developmental support, and accessible educational media remain policy-backed categories.
The European Commission also presented a social plan to strengthen disability rights across the EU, including the rollout of the European Disability Card and Parking Card, an Alliance for Independent Living, improved transport accessibility, and investment in assistive technologies such as AI tools. The Commission noted that 90 million Europeans live with a disability, that the employment rate for persons with disabilities is 55% compared with 77% for persons without disabilities, and that one in three persons with disabilities is at risk of poverty. Those are not just statistics. They are daily-life problems: getting to work, moving through public spaces, living independently, staying financially secure, and participating fully in the community.
For startups, the message is steady: build for compliance, but do not stop there. The strongest companies will treat regulation as the floor (or moat), user need as the guide, and better outcomes as the path into larger markets.
From the Journal: the Curb Cut Effect

This month we published our latest essay, The Curb Cut Effect, which may be the clearest expression yet of how we see the market. The short version is simple: products built for people with disabilities often reveal something true about everyone else. Curb cuts helped wheelchair users move independently through cities, but they also helped parents with strollers, travelers with rolling luggage, delivery workers, and anyone moving through the world with their hands full. The same phenomenon works across electric toothbrushes, video subtitles, audio books, and more.
The essay argues that disability tech is not a niche category. It is one of the largest overlooked markets in the world, with around 2 billion people globally living with significant disability and more than $18 trillion in annual spending power represented by people with disabilities and supporters. But the deeper point is not only market size. It is that disability-first companies often begin where the need is most urgent, the feedback is clearest, and the cost of bad design is highest.
That is why specificity is not something founders should apologize for. In many cases, that focus is where real insight begins. A product that helps a blind or low-vision user interpret nonverbal cues, a neurodivergent worker manage executive function, a wheelchair user control a device hands-free, or a family coordinate complex care may start in disability. However, the truths discovered there often travel into productivity, healthcare, education, enterprise software, robotics, logistics, consumer devices, and everyday life.
May’s news made that argument feel less theoretical. FIFA’s sensory rooms are a curb cut for global events. Apple’s generated subtitles are a curb cut for every uncaptioned video. Meta’s AI glasses are a curb cut for hands-free navigation and perception. Xbox’s adaptive components are a curb cut for play. The pattern is not charity becoming technology. It is human need, under real constraint, becoming better design.

Ability Lane launched this month as a centralized home for disability-focused innovation, bringing accessible technology startups, community members, users, caregivers, and investors into one place. The idea is important: founders need better ways to be discovered, users need easier ways to find tools that support independence and quality of life, and investors need clearer visibility into a market that has been fragmented for too long. We describe Ability Lane as a “Product Hunt+ for the disability innovation space,” built to help startups showcase products, gather feedback, and reach the people who can use, fund, and support them.
This matters because disability innovation does not move forward through capital alone. It moves through co-design, community feedback, founder visibility, and a shared belief that accessible technology is not charity or concessionary work. It is a massive, overlooked market with the potential to improve daily life for people with disabilities, neurodivergent people, caregivers, older adults, and many more. DisabilityTech Investor Summit @ Boston Tech Week
Brittany spoke at the DisabilityTech Investor Summit in Cambridge on May 27, joining a group of investors and operators focused on the DisabilityTech market opportunity. She was joined on stage by Evan Schnidman, head of Fidelity Labs who spoke about Fidelity’s approach to accessibility – further bolstered by the fact that Fidelity Private Shares is a sponsor of Ability Lane. The event was hosted with the Perkins Innovation Center, New England VC Association, and MassBio, and featured VC firms investing in the space along with startups building in the industry.
We were grateful to share what we are seeing with the broader financial and investor community. The conversation felt different from where this market was, even a year ago. More investors understand that disability tech is not a small vertical. More founders are showing up with lived experience, technical depth, and commercial ambition. More partners are helping turn curiosity into action.
Seeing great startups pitch in one room, with Perkins Innovation Center helping convene the field, was a reminder that categories are built in public. They are built by founders, users, clinicians, caregivers, investors, policy leaders, nonprofits, and institutions willing to keep showing up before the market becomes obvious.

June events to watch
June will give the disability and aging innovation community several chances to gather, compare notes, and push the conversation forward:
- Inclusive Africa Conference 2026, June 2-4, Nairobi: Inclusive Africa is Africa’s leading convening for digital accessibility, assistive technology, inclusive innovation, and inclusive policy frameworks. The 2026 event is expected to bring together governments, private-sector leaders, multinational corporations, organizations of persons with disabilities, innovators, and people with lived experience from across the continent.
- NYC AI x Longevity Summit, June 4-5, New York: The summit brings together researchers, clinicians, founders, and engineers working on longevity infrastructure, with a focus on AI, aging clocks, therapeutics, and clinical translation. For our thesis, it is a reminder that aging and disability are increasingly connected through prevention, diagnostics, care models, and the design of longer, more functional lives.
- COSP19, June 9-11, United Nations Headquarters in New York: The 19th Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities will focus on “CRPD at 20” and the next phase of disability-rights implementation in a changing world. Subthemes include care and support systems, autonomy and independence, accessible civic engagement, leadership, and public representation for persons with disabilities.
